A basic hotel but friendly staff and excellent value

Hot water for a bath and a good breakfast

The lift to the fourth floor required a trick to get it moving. The door to room 400 was stiff to open and almost impossible to close, requiring another trick to do so. The tv came out of the 1950s (ie small) and didn't have bbc2. The toilet roll holder on the wall was about 6 feet from the toilet, and although not causing a problem, the overflow pipe from the toilet cistern surprisingly hung over the side of the bath. Never seen that before.

Nice location on the seafront and welcoming staff

The hotel is tired and needs a re-fit but, then again, the room rates are low so you get what you pay for

      Good location, overlooking the beach

No chance of parking legally in the area. Hotel is in a poor state with wall paper coming off the walls, tired furniture, etc. The bathroom was poor with no shower and ancient cork floor tiles. Paying close to £100 per night I would have expected a far higher standard. The hotel needs a complete refurbishment.

It was near the sea and a short walk into the town. You could park outside the hotel on the street for free. It is close to the Channel Tunnel. The rooms were comfortable with flat screen TVs although we did not make use of them.

We had to compete with the regulars at the bar to get service, i.e. get registered and hand in keys - no separate reception and it took a while to locate our booking. Despite the fact that it is advertised as a good overnight stay with breakfast prior to the early morning Eurotunnel departures we were informed that the full English cooked breakfast was not available until 8am, too late for our booking. We were told that we could have toast and coffee at 7am, this was nicely served but we had to search for the breakfast room and only when we were there was the toast/coffee made so we had to hurry. Also there were a couple of cigarette butts left on the ledges of the main stairs and the downstairs bar smelled of smoke.

The Salisbury was about the cheapest hotel that I could find for one night prior to a channel crossing. It is old and tired and has seen better days but I thought that it was pretty clean and the breakfast was good so I would recommend it for anyone who was looking for a basic clean bed for the night without any semblance of luxury.

Outdated generally needs a good clean ,decorating and new furniture putting in to bring it upto the standard people expect these days.

      Friendliness of waitress staff (Tricia?)

Bed mattress was of poor quality. Communication between booking in staff and kitchen staff was very poor - when I booked, they agreed an early breakfast for me, but no-one told the chef. Because of this I was late for my first day's business.

    • Group of friends

Shameless. No attempt to make the rooms welcoming, tired awful decor - a bed in a seedy room.

It was nice and quiet. It is near sea/beach views. The room was neat and tidy. Breakfast was certainly "full English" and enjoyable.

The channel-change button on the room tv didn't work. I did mention this but wasn't bothered because I'm not a tv fan!

The constant laughs, finding that everything was crap; the roll together bed, the dreadful bathroom with the ill-fitting equipment and shower that soaked the floor, the terrible beer and reheated breakfast. The workmen's muddy footprints all theay up the stairs that still hadn't been cleaned the next day and finally the thick painted woodchip wallpaper and plasterboard walls that were used throughout to compromise every architectural feature that the lovely old building still had. I booked 2 rooms for 3 people, so at least I got to see more than one room. Priceless.

Pretty much everything- see above- but it reminded me how the British hospitality industry has a unique take on customer care and value for money which is almost endearing.

A reasonable hotel, bit dated but good location.

Could probably do with a bit of refurbishment.
